Katie Unterreiner, MSW, LICSW

My name is Katie Unterreiner and I am happy to be working at Counseling West Seattle. I graduated from Portland State University with a Masters in Social Work and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Washington.  After graduating with a Masters, I worked as a Family Preservation Therapist at Options Counseling.

I worked at Options Counseling for ten years providing in home counseling to children and families. Through my past experience I have developed skills to work with the variety of clientele at Counseling West Seattle, including adults, couples, families and children. I use narrative therapy with adults and couples. This therapy develops a growth mindset to find positive solutions and strategies for resolving stress and everyday challenges. I provide research based knowledge with the goal to help clients thrive.

I use sensory enrichment therapy and story telling strategies to help children learn how to regulate their emotions and develop critical executive function skills. Environmental enrichment is an innovative therapy that engages two or more senses at a time. I have a 6-8 week curriculum that incorporates brain based games and story telling strategies that help children minimize or alleviate symptoms of anxiety.

In my specialty with children, I use sensory integration, play therapy and art therapy. I am knowledgeable of ADHD and I am an author of the book "Motivate", a tool kit for children and families to follow. As a Licensed Social Worker, I have spent my career using and refining process based techniques inspired by the resiliency and motivation research of Carol Dweck, PhD.  My clients as well as my own family have benefited from this easy to follow tool kit which I teach and use in my practice.

I live in West Seattle with my husband and teenage son.  I enjoy laughing with friends, biking and taking my wild puppy Coco for long walks.
